About Us

The Story
It began with a fence built in 1975 to contain the family dog. Neighbours wanted the same lumber for their own fences and Fred Pysh, sensing an opportunity, said he could sell it to them. He borrowed a truck, sold wood from the driveway and soon his father-in-law began calling Fred ‘The Lumber King’ as a wisecrack. For ten years Fred led a double life as Statistics Professor at the University of Calgary and as entrepreneur. In 1986, Fred forfeited his tenured position for a life in work boots and Lumber King quickly became an integral part of the supply chain of Calgary’s housing and construction industry.

Today, Lumber King is in the hands of Fred’s son, Dan, and is an accredited member of the Better Business Bureau. Dan received his B.A. from the University of Victoria in 2001, planning to work as an economist. But Dan soon sensed that his annual summer job had more to offer in the teachings of economics. Take it from Dan: lumber sales are a harbinger the nation’s economy.
